Why should you adopt a teenager

Since 2018, Mississippi has experienced a 5.88% increase in children aging out of the foster care system. Many of these children leave without any guidance to know how to open a bank account, understand how to obtain a place to live or how much they would need to make to afford a place to live, and other essential life skills needed to simply survive. They will also be without the ability to call someone they trust for help or advice when they are in need of it.

Why should you adopt a teenager?

  1. Provide guidance to younger children in your home and your community.

  2. Teens need families just as much as young children in order to learn life skills and to have emotional support throughout life’s stages. All children deserve the safety and comfort of a family. They need someone to see them off to college, teach them to drive, learn how to budget their money, and relationship advice.

  3. They can verbalize their wants and feelings, and they understand the need for stability in their life.

  4. Teenagers want to be adopted. They are not in foster care because something is “wrong” with them or that they have done something wrong. Most teens in foster care are still in foster care due to no fault of their own.

  5. There are still many firsts to experience with a teenager. First love, first job, first home…

  6. Teenagers are fun. They can teach you about the latest slang/lingo, help you understand technology, and make sure you are always fashion-forward.

  7. A teenager can positively influence your life as much as you can theirs.
